Spring has Sprung

Posted by Vicki on 04/25/2012

Love the spring weather? Does it get you in the mood to open the windows or get outdoors and work in the yard? Remember you need to be prudent about how long you spend working. Most of us have been hybernating during the winter months and our bodies are just begining to wake up.

Break up your work tasks into small segments of tasks, taking time to rest about 10-15 min between tasks. Using muscles you are used to using can create stiff, sore muscles the next day. A good rule of thumb is that you want to be able to do as much tomorrow as you did today. Don't try to get a years worth of clean up done in one afternoon.

Use good body mechanics. If you have to get into an awkward posture, STOP the task, it is a set up for an injury. Remember to keep heavy objects next to your body to avoid putting a heavy strain on your lower back. Use a step stool for overhead tasks to take the strain off your neck.

Use a high suncreen to avoid getting sunburned. Yes, you can get a sunburn on a cloudy day. A good sunscreen will need to be reapplied every few hours if you are working up a sweat. Keep your skin safe. Skin cancer is the number one type of cancer in the US, so protect yourself.

Keep yourself well hydrated with water while working. It is very easy to get dehydrated in the warmer weather and that can cause your body damage.

May your yard be beautiful and you body be healthy to enjoy your beautiful yard! Have a happy healthy spring...
