Sick and tired of being sick and tired?

When you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, you can change it! Remember that how you feel today is a result of things in your past. Think of training for a sporting event. The training you have done results in your level of fitness at the time of the event. Now I understand that you may not be training for a sporting event right now, but you are training for the next year of your life…right now. In my experience as a physical therapist for the last 30 years, I find that it can be the small choices that are the most important. The decision to park far away so you walk extra steps into the grocery store. The decision to drink a glass of water rather than the soda you normally drink at one meal of the day. The decision to sit up straight at your desk rather than sitting on your foot that causes a twist in your spine for the 8 hours you are at your desk.

Moving in general is the major component in keeping fit and healthy. Moving doesn’t mean you have to make a big effort to go to the gym and strain to get your exercise in with 50 other sweaty bodies. You can doing things like cleaning out that closet you have been meaning to clean out for the last 10 years. You can take a walk around the block and maybe take your dog with you. Think of things you enjoy that maybe you haven’t done in years like dancing to your favorite song. Any movement is better than no movement. Get out of our chair and start moving those muscles and joints more.

Exercise is more fun with a buddy. Talk to someone that also needs to get up and move around. Get a buddy that will help you stick to a routine of getting some exercise 3-4 times a week. Change your attitude about exercise and you have to look at it as a fun thing. I advise not spending a lot of money on something like a bike, treadmill, or other piece of equipment. I find people think that if they spend a lot of money on a piece of equipment it will somehow make them exercise to justify the money spent. The truth is it only makes them feel guilty about NOT using it and they will make themselves sick with guilt which in turn makes them even more inactive!

Stretching is a type of exercise and often is more important than steps you take or weights you lift. Stretching keeps your joints from getting so tight that the movement seems almost impossible. Get on a good stretching program as the bare minimum of changing your future. Remember you are building your good health one decision at a time, today is the day to start with a small decision of stretching those tight muscles. Start with this stretch to get your back in better shape.

Lay down a press up onto you hands. If this is too hard on your shoulders, try this one instead.
