Preventing the #1 Type of Cancer

Posted by Vicki on 05/30/2017

This weeks tip is about caring for your skin. I hope you enjoy the warmer days ahead.

Did you know that your skin is the largest organ your body has? It is considered an organ because many functions occur by the skin to help your body. Some of the functions of the skin include:
  1. Protect our inner organs from outside infections.
  2. Protect you from dehydration.
  3. Protect our inner body from abrupt destruction changes.

Prolonged sun damage can cause wrinkles, brown spots, destruction of the collagen tissue and in severe cases skin cancer. Skin cancer is the number one type of cancer contracted and can be fatal. It's caused when the skin begins to make an increase number of skin cells to try to protect your body from the sun, and those increase cells begin to take over the area. Repeated sun burns is one of the primary causes of skin cancer. Sun screen is your protection from the harmful burns to the skin.

Sunscreens that protect against UVA and UVB will protect you from the rays of the sun that cause cancer. Experts say there is no need for SPF over 50. Lastly, you should reapply sunscreen at least every 1 1/2 hours and more frequently if you are getting in/out of water or sweating a lot.

Stay safe this summer and keep your skin healthy. Here's to a great summer!
