Heat or Ice? Which Should You Choose?

Every injury to the body results in bleeding into the tissues. That bleeding can be minor, with no visual notice of the bleeding, to a very severe bruise. How quickly you recover from the injury will depend on how much bleeding there is into the surrounding tissues.
The better you control the bleeding, the better the area will heal. So initially you want to use ice for the first 72 hours following the injury. After the 72 hours, you can switch to using heat. You will want to use heat before you exercise, and continue to use ice after you exercise until the pain and swelling is resolved.
