Exercise Dose

Exercise is great to help you live longer, but how much is too much and how much is not enough? Exercise doesn’t come with instructions and it’s hard to know how much the right amount is, without injuring you. It is important to understand what to do that can cause more harm than good. The New York Times did an article on just that (http://mobile.nytimes.com) to help the public figure out how to stay healthy. As a physical therapist, I often see injuries from exercising too aggressively. So, how much is the right amount? Studies show that walking for an hour 3 X week has the best chances of improving your health without causing injury. No exercise at all puts you at the highest risk for premature death. While too aggressive exercise can actually cause injuries to the muscles and tendons that could potentially sideline you from exercising at all.
