3 Tips For Enjoying Your Golden Years

Posted by Vicki on 03/12/2019

Good health is a precious thing. Many people say that the golden years are called that due to the fact that it takes all your gold to keep your health. This blog is about how to keep your health and your gold. Good health habits are hard to form but easy to live with while bad health habits are easy to form but hard to live with. That is mind, good health is a choice we all make every moment of every day. It is everything from how you sit in your chair to what you put in your mouth. The bad habits sort of sneak up on us before we even know we have made a choice.

As we move into the “golden years” good health must be purposefully planned out. Just as people plan their retirement, they need to plan their good health. There are so many things to plan for, but I think we can boil it down to 3 things:

  1. Your body needs good food to be able to fight off disease processes. Good nutrition can cure more things than any pill ever thought about. For example, did you know that green leafy vegetables are natural blood thinners and can keep you from strokes and heart disease? Your planning should first and foremost be about your nutrition.
  2. Your body needs to move to stay fit. You are training for the greatest marathon of all time, life. You have to keep moving and just as in training don’t try to go from 0 to 100 miles an hour without allowing your body to adjust. You should focus on flexibility, balance and light strengthening.
  3. Your mind/spirit must have a reason for continuing. I find that the older I get, the less I remember how to have fun. The less I think about how to feed my spirit. Today, I was thinking about what to do during my busy day to feed my spirit with a fun thing. I came up with nothing…the more I thought the more I realized my life is filled with a To-do list and not a Fun-To-do list. The business of life is about feeding your spirit first and foremost. So have a plan to incorporate more fun in your daily life. Laughter is the strongest pain killer known to medicine. No joke, laughing releases a stronger pain killing hormone than pharmacists can manufacture!

Did you know that after 40 you start losing your balance, strength, and your endurance? There are simple things you can do to help all of these things that take minimal time and effort. For example, while brushing your teeth in the morning, spend 30 seconds balancing on one foot, then 30 seconds balancing on the other foot to improve your balance. That is a very easy habit to get into that will pay very big dividends moving forward. There are hundreds of really small changes you can make that literally will pay off each year moving forward. Just like saving your pennies will lead to big dollars, health habits can be small things done daily. Small choices of eating a vegetable with each meal can really give your body the power to heal itself.
